Thomas Marek's Demo Reel
Trumpet, bass, guitar, drums, and feet: Is it a dance event or a jazz concert?
The question doesn’t even arise.
When tap dancer and drummer Thomas Marek takes the stage with his band, music becomes a visual experience. The percussive rhythms of tap dance blend seamlessly with the intricate arrangements and improvisations of his fellow musicians, transforming a tap dance performance into a concert.
In this dynamic ensemble, featuring trumpeter Thomas Berghammer, bassist Gina Schwarz, guitarist Kenji Herbert, and tap dancer/drummer Thomas Marek, the boundaries of jazz and tap are continually expanded. They venture beyond traditional song structures, exploring both musical and dance improvisation. Here, constants like timing, melody, and theme are deconstructed and reimagined into shifting, fluid patterns. Marek’s tap improvisations create their own percussive language, where the entire body becomes an instrument.
With the bold, avant-garde playing of Schwarz, Berghammer, and Herbert, this collaborative performance offers an intense, immersive concert experience. It’s driven by the musicians’ synergy, their communication, and their spontaneous interaction on stage.
